23 SILVER DOLLAR
Scenic rating: 7
on Turquoise Lake
Like almost all of the Turquoise Lake campgrounds, Silver Dollar sprawls through a lodgepole pine forest on the hilly shores of the lake. Unlike the other campgrounds, the narrow road and short spurs deter many RV drivers, so this campground tends to be quieter than the campgrounds to the north. Most sites are near the road, but they are grouped in threes and fours, so it doesn’t feel like you’re surrounded. As a result, these sites feel more private than at many of the other campgrounds. Sites 3, 4, and 13 have the most privacy. A foot trail to the lake begins next to site 18. (For more information on Turquoise Lake, see the Belle of Colorado listing earlier in this chapter.)
Campsites, facilities: There are 43 sites for tents and RVs up to 22 feet. There are no hookups or pull-throughs. Picnic tables, fire rings, and grills are provided. Tent pads are provided at sites 1, 2, 8, 13-16, 24, 27, 33, 37, 40, 42, and 43. Flush toilets, drinking water, a picnic area, and a boat ramp are available. Leashed pets are permitted.
Reservations, fees: Reservations are accepted at 877/444-6777 and www.recreation.gov. The fee is $24 per night. Cash or check only. Open Memorial Day-Labor Day.
Directions: In Leadville, from the intersection of U.S. Highway 24 and 6th Street, drive south on 6th Street. Turn right on McWethy Road/County Road 4 and follow this road for 1.0 mile. Turn right on County Road 9 (unmarked) and in 1.5 miles turn left on another unmarked road. In 0.5 mile, turn left on Forest Route 104. In 1.5 miles, turn right at the Matchless Boat Ramp sign. The fee station is straight ahead in 0.7 mile. Loop B is on the left, and Loop A is on the right.
